Vrysi ton Pegiotisson is a unique attraction, located in the town of Pegeia, in Pafos. Known as “the fountain of the people of Pegeia”, this landmark, which was teeming with natural water sources, was discovered by shepherds centuries ago, and it was here that the first fountain was initially constructed.
Up until 1956, Pegeia’s primary supply of drinking water was its fountain. Drinking water was still available from the hill’s fountain and another natural source until a few years ago. Achilleas Constantinou, a contractor from Lapithos, demolished the fountain in 1907 and rebuilt it. The fountain is a beautiful structure that has ties to Pegeia’s cultural past.
The young girls would congregate near the fountain’s location, according to tradition, to meet up with friends or family members.
The poets of the day, who delivered local news through song, were inspired by such a great love to write the well-known traditional song, “Vrysi ton Pegiotisson.” In fact, they urged individuals who had been wounded by love to visit the fountain and drink from it so that they can be healed.
Today, Vrysi ton Pegiotisson is a special landmark attraction, and the jewel of the community. It is located below the Town Hall in the centre of the village and a variety of cultural events are frequently hosted there throughout the year. Locals often visit the fountain to recall joyful childhood memories; however, many visitors also go there to take in the stunning view of the lush surroundings.
