Pafos was the capital of Cyprus in ancient times and once again celebrated this accolade when in 2017 it reigns as European Capital of Culture
A wide-reaching and diverse cultural programme was implemented, showcasing the participation of visiting European cultures and encouraging both residents and visitors to embrace the many different aspects of a true cultural celebration.
Family events, music, art, crafts, theatre, sport, food and wine were among the key elements that added quality, diversity and creativity to the programme. These activities inspired, challenged and engaged audiences, while creating a strong sense of pleasure and pride across the Pafos Region and the island as a whole.
Many of the events took place outdoors through the Open Air Factory programme, making full use of the region’s excellent year-round weather conditions.
Tourism was further strengthened, with thousands of additional visitors from across Europe travelling to the area. The creation of modern infrastructure also improved the image and aesthetics of the city, contributing to the transformation of Pafos into a modern and well-developed destination.
The cultural links with other European countries have been strengthened and are expected to grow even further. Today, the city and the wider region are better known across Europe, gaining greater recognition and visibility among international audiences.
Tourism has been developed, additional thousands of visitors from all over Europe visited the area.
The creation of modern infrastructure city has ameliorate the image and the aesthetics of the city and Pafos is now a modern and well developed city.
The bonds with other European countries have been and will be enhanced even more.
The city/region is now better known in Europe, thus it will gain further recognition from other countries as well.
