The Apostle is said to have been tied to a stone pillar and given thirty-nine lashes for preaching Christianity in Pafos. His mission was ultimately successful, making Cyprus one of the first places in the world to come under Christian administration. Today, the site associated with Saint Paul’s suffering is an important pilgrimage stop. Saint Paul’s Pillar stands among the ancient remains surrounding Panagia Chrysopolitissa Church, including the ruins of an Early Byzantine basilica and a mosque dating back to the Ottoman period. The Cypriot Apostle Barnabas later returned to Cyprus on another missionary journey. According to tradition, it was in the ancient city of Salamis that Barnabas met his fate, after facing opposition while preaching. The House of Theseus / Mosaics The House of Theseus is one of the largest Roman-period buildings known in Cyprus. This 2nd-century villa preserves an impressive mosaic depicting Theseus fighting the Minotaur, one of the most powerful scenes from Greek mythology. The building contains more than 100 rooms, arranged in four wings around an open colonnaded courtyard. Residential, domestic, working and communal areas occupied the eastern, western and northern sections, while ritual spaces are visible in the southern wing. The site also includes the remains of baths, which were uncovered in the south-eastern part of the building. Located a short distance from the picturesque Pafos Harbour, the House of Theseus is believed to have been the residence of the Roman Proconsul Sergius Paulus, who embraced Christianity after hearing the preaching of Saint Paul. Saint Kendeas Saint Kendeas was a monk who lived as a hermit near the coast of Pafos. Founded by Saint Neophytos in 1159, the monastery is renowned for the Enkleistra, an enclosed hermitage carved into the mountain by the saint himself. The Enkleistra contains some of the most remarkable Byzantine frescoes in Cyprus, dating back to the 12th century. Born in Lefkara in 1134, Saint Neophytos is one of the most important religious figures in Cyprus and in the Greek Orthodox Church. During his time at the monastery, he served as a priest, while his reputation quickly spread across the island. He lived a humble life, spending much of his time in seclusion and dedicating himself to theological writing until his death in 1219. Today, only a small number of monks live at the monastery, which also houses a museum displaying many religious items, including manuscripts, sacred vessels, old books, priestly vestments, jewellery, Cypriot pottery and maps. Panagia Chrysorrogiatissa Monastery Founded in 1152 AD by a monk named Ignatios, the Monastery of Panagia Chrysorrogiatissa is another remarkable example of Cyprus’ rich cultural heritage. Located near the village of Panagia and surrounded by dense pine forest, the monastery welcomes both religious and non-religious visitors from near and far, offering a peaceful and idyllic setting. According to tradition, Monk Ignatios discovered a miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary, believed to have been painted by Luke the Evangelist, and later founded the monastery in her honour. Known as the Monastery of “Our Lady of the Golden Pomegranate”, the present building dates back to 1770 and houses an important collection of icons and religious treasures. Located at the centre of the monastery grounds, the main church features impressive Byzantine frescoes and mosaics. Agia Moni Monastery Known as “The Monastery of Priests”, due to the number of saints and priests who once lived there or passed through its doors, Agia Moni Monastery is closely linked to the origins of monasticism in Cyprus. Founded around 300 AD by Saint Nicholas and Saint Eftychios as a place of prayer and contemplation, the monastery is renowned for once housing a sacred relic: a piece of the cloak believed to have been worn by the Virgin Mary, which remained there until 1754. Agia Moni was also the former residence of Saint Athanasius the Athonite, who lived there between 965 and 969 AD. Georgian Monastery Often referred to in Georgian historical sources as The Gialia Holy Mother Georgian Monastery, the monastery of Panayia Crysogialiotissa was founded between 970 and 979 by David Kuropalates, King of Tao Klarjeti – formerly southwest Georgia (northwest of Turkey). Located in the northern reaches of the Pafos forest, the monastery was once a significant centre for Georgian culture in Cyprus, and was well-looked after by the Georgian kings, David Agmashenebeli (1089-1125) and Tamer (1184-1210). At the heart of the monastery was an education centre that housed a large collection of books that were later transcribed and translated and made available worldwide. According to sources, The Gialia Holy Mother Georgian Monastery was one of the richest monasteries in Cyprus generating an annual income of 300 ducats. The ruins of the Georgian Orthodox monastery were rediscovered in 1981 by renowned US-based Georgian scholar, Vakhtang Jabadze. In 2006 -2010 an archaeological expedition organised by the Ministry of Culture and Monument Protection of Georgia excavated and studied the Gialia Monastery Complex, the Saint Nicholas Church with the graveyard for monks, the cell of a hermit monk and the monastery’s mill. The main temple of the monastery is a tri-conch domed church, the only of its kind in Cyprus, but there are many such churches in Georgia and especially in Tao-Klarjeti. The church interior is entirely painted with scenes of the Baptism of Christ in the south apse and the Descent from the Cross in the north apse. There are semi-figures of holy fathers at the altar; fragments of painted iconostases were found in the ruins of the church. The main layer of the monastery wall painting is an example of the highly creative painting style of the pre-Renaissance Komnenian Epoch (12th Century). The Saint George hall chapel was built in the 11th Century, to the north of Gialia Holy Mother Church. A fresco inscription with an appeal to Saint George was identified inside the chapel and there is a fresco of the warrior Saint George at the chapel door. A two-storey bell tower with a gate on the lower floor was built soon afterwards west of the chapel. Holy Monastery of Panagia Salamiotissa Approximately one kilometre southeast of Salamiou stands the Holy Monastery of Panagia Eleusis, also known as Salamiotissa. The small, yet beautiful chapel is the only building left from the old monastery, which was closed during the last years of Turkish rule, because after the revolution of 1821, Turkish authorities prohibited new monks from becoming monks while increasing the taxation of all Monas, the so-called ‘haratsi’. The monastery’s past is largely unknown. However, the scant remaining evidence indicate that the Monastery existed at least as early as the 16th century. According to Archimandrite Kyprianos, in 1788 the Monastery was administratively part of the Diocese of Pafos. In 1805, the Monastery’s holdings included “… 284 kafikia fields and 80 olive trees…”. In 1866, 98 acres of land with 53 olive trees were documented. The Monastery’s existence is first mentioned in an Ottoman document signed by Kadi Mohamud and sealed by Naipis Mehmed Hussein in 1656, appointing Pope Parthenius from the Monastery of Salamis as guardian and administrator of the property of a certain man called Philip, who died leaving a young orphan. Undoubtedly, the modest church that exists now, and was built in the 16th century (most likely in 1550 AD) was Catholic, possibly the secondary church of the Monastery. The miraculous icon of Panagia Salamiotissa originated in the early 13th century, and the Monastery may have existed since then. After all, the 11th and 12th centuries are regarded as the golden ages of monastic life in Cyprus, because with its definitive recovery from the Byzantines, Emperor Basil II the Bulgarian Slayer permitted the establishment of new monasteries and the dedication of property to existing ones.[/vc_column_text][/mkdf_accordion_tab][mkdf_accordion_tab title_tag="h6" title="Monastery of Virgin Mary Chrysolakourna"][vc_column_text css=""]

Monastery of Virgin Mary Chrysolakourna Around the 12th century, at the height of the Byzantine era, the male monastic order of the Virgin Mary “Chrysolakournas” was founded. Featuring a three-nave basilica, the church served as the principal structure for the monastery, which was dedicated to the Virgin Mary. According to Cypriot folklorists and academicians, the name “Chrysolakourna” refers most likely to “Panagia Zoodohos Pygi” (Virgin Mary the life-carrying spring) and is derived from the Greek words “chryso” (golden) and “lacuna” (Latin for lake, spring, or trough). Of all the monasteries in the Pafos district, it is the oldest. It served as the official residence of the Bishop of Pafos while France ruled Cyprus (1190–1489). Following the hanging of the abbot Silvestros and the Turkish pillage of the property, the monastery was abandoned on July 10, 1821. A true replica of the icon of the Virgin Mary painted in 1703 by iconographer Parthenios, which was prevented from being destroyed, is on display inside the church. Saint Catherine in Fytefkia The Holy Monastery of Saint Catherine in Fytefkia, dates to the late 15th and early 16th centuries and is one of the most remarkable churches in Cyprus. It draws particular interest for its architecture. The church is one of the most important basilicas of the Latin period, dedicated to Saint Catherine. Classified as a three-aisle church from the Frankish-Byzantine style basilica with a dome, this architectural design that was widely used in Cyprus in the 15th and 16th centuries. The three areas are formed by arches that are based on pillars. The estates located nearby Saint Catherine in Fytefkia were among the homesteads of the Holy Monastery of Saint Catherine of Sinai during the Ottoman era. The monastery was spread out over a land are of 3000 donums that the monks of the monastery were renting out to residents of Kritou Terra until the early part of the 20th Century. Virgin Mary Chrysopateritissa The area pays homage to the Virgin Mary, through a beautiful monastery known as Panagia Hrysopateritissa. Located five kilometres from the village, and nestled within the Pafos Forest close to Pomos dam, the monastery was built in 1520 and is a popular amongst locals and tourists. The monastery derives its name from the priests – pateres – that once lived there. In recent years, the structure was extended 20 metres on the western side of the church, at a higher level from the old temple. Visitors can observe the entire structure from higher ground but need to descend a few steps to access the church at ground level. The chapel itself is made of stone. Two doors offer entry access into the church, which features beautifully painted icons and murals. The old iconostasis was originally ruined, however, a new one was carved in its place. The eastern section of the church was built on the ruins of an earlier Christian basilica and was later extended westwards with a domed cross-in-square structure. Panagia Chryseleousa preserves rare frescoes dating from the 12th, 13th and 15th centuries, with one of the most interesting depicting the Miracle of the Fishing. Zoodohos Pigi Church – Amargeti village Zoodohos Pigi is the principal parish church of Amargeti. It was built between 1888 and 1890 on the foundations of an earlier place of worship. The 1953 Pafos earthquake damaged part of the church. During restoration in 1956 the building was extended westward, creating the form that survives today. The historic chapel of Agios Theodosios is located 300 metres on the outskirts of the village of Achelia, in the district of Pafos, and is regarded as one of Cyprus’ most significant churches. The imposing Byzantine church of Saint Theodosius of Achelia, dedicated to Saint Theodosius the Cenobiarch, is 10 metres high and around 8 metres wide, and was built in the 12th and 13th centuries with rough ashlars in the configuration of an isosceles cross with a dome at the intersection. It is encircled by a low wall and is built at a lower level than the surrounding area. It does not have a bell tower and can accommodate up to a hundred worshippers. Its carved wood iconostasis is framed by representations of saints. The temple has a single entrance in the middle of the southern wing’s southern wall. The interior of the church of Agios Theodosios is completed by the remains of three layers of frescoes, the most recent of which dates from the 16th century and is located on the northern wall of the western part of the church, depicting Saint Anastasia the Apothecary and Saints Andronikos and Athanasia. The frescoes of the Apostles Peter and Paul are preserved in much better condition under the arches (on the southern wall of the church’s western wing) and are accompanied by portraits of a young man and an older man, perhaps the church’s donor, in whose memory the fresco was probably painted. Furthermore, frescoes of Saints Nicholas and Theodosius (east of the northern leg) have been preserved, as have fragments of frescoes of a deacon and a mounted warrior saint (west of the northern leg). The second layer frescoes, on the other hand, originate from the 13th century and are regarded the most significant due to their technique. The chapel of Agios Minas dates to the 16th Century. It is a small and simple church with the comfort to accommodate up to thirty people. Located three kilometres west of the village, in a deserted area with wild vegetation, the chapel of Agios Minas is a one-room vaulted church. Externally it is made of stone and its outer wall is almost one metre wide. Its bell tower is very rough, but it is there to sound for the call of the faithful. Inside the chapel is simple and features old hagiography that have been ruined over time. The iconostasis of the temple is a simple, wooden structure with few icons. The chapel operates several times a year. There are many who prefer it for various sacraments, mainly baptisms. Inside, visitors will find beautiful icons and religious artifacts that represent the Orthodox faith, enhancing the chapel’s spiritual atmosphere. Many years ago, this chapel served as a monastery. Its exact construction date is unclear, but it is believed to have been built in the 18th century and functioned as a monastery until 1821. The chapel belonged to the Jerusalem Patriarchate and housed an abbot and two deacons. Ayia Barbara Chapel is the only remnant of the monastery; it is said to have burned down and was subsequently rebuilt. Only the sanctuary and the south wall survived, which now form part of the existing chapel. The chapel is located on the north side of the village, about one and a half kilometers from the village center, near the village cemetery. It has a rectangular shape and is built in a simple architectural style, made of stone and painted white. The church is relatively small and can accommodate up to a hundred people. The iconostasis is wooden and features three portals to provide access to both the old and new sanctuaries. The six icons adorning the iconostasis are relatively modern, and there is also a wooden Psalter. Mass is celebrated six to seven times a year. The small chapel dedicated to Saint Constantine and Saint Helena is relatively new. It was founded in 1970 with donations and contributions from residents and other villagers. Located east of the village, the church is a modest single aisled structure with arches and can seat fifty people. The exterior was painted white, and a bell tower was subsequently constructed. Within the church, there is a wooden and basic iconostasis with some icons. Ten years ago, the chapel was repaired.
