“A nation’s culture resides in the heart and soul of its people”, said Mahatma Gandhi; his words couldn’t be more spot on for the Agricultural Festival that takes place this year in Statos-Agios Fotios village. Farmers, handcrafters, woodworkers, weavers, embroiderers and many more artisans join up under the auspices of the Cyprus Agricultural Payments Organization (CAPO) to demonstrate Cyprus tradition, customs and products.
Stroll around the village square and meet passionate local growers who will exhibit their produces, showcasing the agricultural tradition that has nurtured many generations on the island. Greet the handcrafters and see how their crafts are made, like vourka (a goatskin bag made of the intact skin of a goat), or a shepherd’s crook. Local women with their skillful hands will demonstrate the traditional embroideries and hand-woven textiles explaining patterns and legends. Woodcarvers will reveal their secrets of how to shape images onto wood using special sharp tools.
If you attend this festival, make sure you go with an empty stomach because the delicacies made on spot are a feast for the eyes. You will have the chance to taste halloumi cheese, palouzes (creamy dessert; grape juice mixed with flour), pasteli (sweet made of carob syrup), loukoumi (Cypriot delight), honey products and many more. Make sure to watch the demonstration of traditional recipes by TV personality Chryso Lefou.
Dance along the Cypriot live music and try to learn the moves of the folkloric dances. Don’t miss the live concerts by famous Greek and Cypriot singers.
Make the most of your visit by walking along the cobbled, winding streets; visit museums and other attractions and discover local artifacts.

Event Details
A blast from the past festival, where all the old traditions and agricultural practices related to grape harvest come to life. In September and October the vineyards are ready to welcome the hand pickers who collect the bunches with delicate moves, leaving the grapes intact. It is a very intensive, uncomfortable and hard labor but at the same time praiseworthy and priceless.
Live the experience by attending the Grape Harvest Festival in Panagia, a mountainous village in Pafos district. Perched at an altitude of 900 metres, this quaint village celebrates the grape harvest season a little bit later than the other villages as the high altitude and the limited sunshine make the grapes ripe in October.
Join the walk to the vineyards accompanied with donkeys and live music by talented players. Pick up the grapes and put the bunches gently in the baskets hanging from the donkeys. After the harvesting is done, a well-deserved “Mpoukkoma” (small bites of traditional breakfast) is offered to pay off the hard work. From the fields we move to the square, where the grapes are put into the old-style winepress. Deep your feet into the grapes and watch the juice flowing in the barrels.
Stroll around the square and see demonstrations of how to make palouzes (creamy dessert of grape juice and flour), soutzioukkos (strings of almonds or walnuts dipped in palouzes) and zivania (strong pomace drink). Taste and buy other grape based products and observe the handcrafters who give life to items from the past. Before you leave, make sure you treat yourself with local wine offered by local wine makers.
During the festival you can also enjoy a photo and rural items exhibition, donkey rides and children activities; and in the afternoon, kick up your heels to traditional dances and music!

Event Details
Cyprus is one of the world’s oldest vine-growing and wine-producing country. There is archaeological evidence that wine-making on our island may have existed 6000 years ago. The warm climate and the fertile soils are perfect for growing vines. Wine producers grow both many indigenous vines as well as new imported varieties.
Every September and October, is time to harvest the grapes and an opportunity for Cypriots to celebrate their long wine making history and tradition. Most of the celebrations take place in the so-called krasochoria (wine producing villages) area, which covers the hilly areas of Lemesos and Pafos districts.
It is best to visit late in the afternoon at sunset. The wine villages are charming villages with traditional stone houses and cobbled streets. The surrounding forest cools the hot breeze of the Mediterranean Summer, which is still quite intense at the beginning of autumn. Yet, the leaves begin to turn yellow and foretell that the weather will change. Happy voices, music and grape juice aromas fill the air. Wine with its intoxicating, aromatic taste triggers your taste neurons. The people here have wine making in their blood, dating back to ancient times, when the faithful worshiped Dionysus the Wine God with paganistic feasts. Dionysos is the God of madness, of masks, of the sacred art of drama. Within his worship, the faithful often experienced ekstasis, which means literally to be outside of one’s self, and enthousiasmos, which is to be inspired, or filled with a divine spirit.
Nowadays there is still plenty of folk dance and music to watch and enjoy competitions in winetasting and revival of old traditional customs. Kiosks selling fresh fruit and vegetables, local products and traditional delicacies for you to taste.
Among all these activities, the preparation of traditional sweets from grape juice takes center stage. Palouzes, siousioukos and kiofterka are traditional sweets made from grape juice. Palouzes is a thin cream, which is made from white grape juice mixed with flour and is a very natural and healthy dessert. When the cream sets, the palouzes can be flavored with various aromas, such as geranium leaves, flower water, vanilla or mastiha (mastic resin). You can enjoy it warm or cold. Siousioukos and the kiofterka are made from palouzes. For soutzouko, almonds or walnuts are stringed on thick threads and then dipped in the palouzes. When the first layer has cooled, the thread is dipped again and the process is repeated until the layer becomes thick enough.
For the kiofterka, the palouzes that is not consumed is poured in flat pans and left to cool. After a few days, is cut into rectangular pieces and left in a shady place to dry and acquire an elastic texture. Kiofterka cut into small pieces and mixed with almonds can accompany a glass of wine.

Learn the secrets of the Cypriot cuisine, tantalize your palate with unique traditional flavors, meet ardent handcrafters and enjoy a scenery of mountain tops dotted with fruit-bearing trees and pine trees at the Gastronomy and Traditional Festivals taking place at our picturesque villages in the Troodos Mountain Range.
Gastronomy and Traditional Festivals have a commendable way of combining traditional elements and turning them into fascinating exploratory experiences and outdoor parties. These fests offer you the chance to taste Cyprus in one day. Numerous kiosks line up like toy soldiers at the village squares where you can taste and buy traditional local delicacies, such as Trachanas soup (a thick soup based on a mixture of grain and fermented milk), Palouzes (creamy dessert; grape juice mixed with flour), Halloumi cheese, cured meats, Resi (wheat with meat dish), Glyka tou koutaliou (spoon sweet preserves), Cyprus bread, wine, Zivania (a distilled beverage) and much more. Don’t miss the cooking demonstrations by Michelin starred Cypriot chefs and TV personalities who present traditional dishes and new recipes based on local products.
Handcrafters and artisans also join these festivals aiming to educate, inspire, preserve and promote the traditional crafts and arts of Cyprus. It is a way for the young people to learn about disappearing occupations and for the elderly to recall their childhood. Watch the whole procedure of how you weave a reed basket and understand their different uses. See demonstrations of how to make various shepherd’s tools like vourka (a goatskin bag made of the intact skin of a goat), or a crook. Learn the secrets of traditional chair making, admire the patterns of embroideries, sit on a voufa (loom) and weave clothes and tapestries.
All festivals feature traditional music and dancing. Dance along to the rhythm of our traditional music and applaud the artful moves of the skillful dancers.
Make the most of your visit in all these villages by visiting local attractions, Byzantine churches and rural museums that remain open during the festivals, which are perceived as the “event of the year” of each village.
