The New Stage of THOC presents the play „Pains of Youth“ by Ferdinand Bruckner, translated by Giorgos Depastas and directed by Aliki Danezi-Knutsen.

The play depicts with unprecedented candour the moral corruption and cynicism of a group of medical students. For these young people, youth itself is a fatal disease and the idea of death by suicide is always present in their minds.

The play is inappropriate for children.

Theatrical play based on a novel of K. Tsiolkovsky

The performance was staged by the renowned Kaluga Regional Drama Theater, which is the same age as Alexander Pushkin and, in 242 years of its existence, has preserved and enhanced the best traditions of Russian theatre art.

The play was created on the basis of the novel “Outside the Earth” by the outstanding Russian scientist and inventor, the founder of theoretical cosmonautics, K. Tsiolkovsky.

The story of the novel says that between the highest picks of the Himalayas is a beautiful castle is hidden- the dwelling of people. Several scientists, philosophers, researchers and inventors have recently settled in it. Disappointment in people and the joys of life drove the heroes into solitude and united into a fraternal hermit family.

What do these highly intelligent hermits dream about? Of course, how to make people fly into space. Four scientists, fanatically devoted to science, are developing an ambitious first space travel plan. They make calculations, design and build a spacecraft, and then, taking with them two curious girls, start from the Earth.

The spectator will witness a takeoff with heavy overloads and astronauts hovering in zero gravity. Then there will be a construction of a space greenhouse and consumption of space grown cucumbers and apples, spacewalks and even landing on the moon. And all this – with impressive special effects, bright costumes and sparkling fun. Desperate dreamers … But their dreams must come true!

The duration of the performance is 1 hour and 10 minutes.

Alexander Gelman, one of the most significant playwrights of his time, wrote the Bench in 1983. Since then it has been translated and played in thirty countries and it keeps being played, due to its profound human angle but also to its bitter humour that renders it timeless and up to date in a tragicomic way.

It was written in the Soviet Union of the eighties, the period before its fall, when arbitrage and corruption prevail. The society is at an impasse as well as its people. They dream of another life somewhere else, somehow differently. They get away to other worlds, to other people’s lives, they create fictional stories, they evade a suffocating and intolerable routine, claiming for an efflorescence.

It’s a tragicomic story of two lonely people. One day they find each other in the public park. He and She bring on stage the most vivid, the most prolific of the themes, Love. They walk together the route from lie to truth. A route in which lie is confused with the need for personal freedom, free reflection, ideas. A route that in some moments lie is being the only truth.

They suffer and practise the everlasting game of duel between man and woman that either shall bring them closer or shall signify their movement towards loneliness.
Both of them look for a new start, although they already know it’s made long ago…

A story that could take place in every public park, in every country.

The International Project “Russian Theatre Seasons in Cyprus” presents the fairytale “The Little Mermaid”, by Hans- Christian Andersen, By “Glas” theatre Moscow.

April 18, 19:00 – Paphos, Markideio Theatre

Young guests and their parents will experience a bright show with colorful decorations and costumes that will give children unforgettable memories. The performance will be shown in Russian with Greek and English subtitles.

The heroes of the fairy tale, performed by actors of the theater “Glas” will tell about self-sacrifice and the savior power of love, and the set design will help the children’s imagination to be transported into the world of the sea depths, and then to the prince’s castle.

The Little Mermaid is a fairy tale by the world famous Danish writer Hans-Christian Andersen, first published in 1837. Since then, it has inspired many directors, artists, publishers, and musicians.

If today we ask: „Do you know Andersen’s The Little Mermaid?“ Most will answer: „Yes, a beautiful and sad tale.“ However, few know this story as it was created by Andersen, and do not think about the deep ideas hidden behind the “mermaid” story. Numerous interpretations have deprived this tale of the most important – the Christian worldview of the author. What remained in the memory is that the little Mermaid dreamed of getting legs in return for the tail and died. But she was dreaming of getting an immortal soul. That was the story in the very first edition of H-C. Andersen 1837! Moreover, the end of this story is happy.

The performance will be shown with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation in the framework of the project “Russian Theatre Seasons in Cyprus” organized by the Russian Embassy in Cyprus and the Russian Cultural Centre in Cyprus, which is being implemented under the auspices of the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Nicos Anastasiades.
