Great success for the popular opera Il Barbiere di Siviglia (The Barber of Seville)
at the 20th edition of Pafos Aphrodite Festival.
The imposing Medieval Castle of Paphos under the starry sky and the beauty of the vast sea were the perfect backdrop for Gioachino Rossini’s masterpiece Il Barbiere di Siviglia (The barber of Seville), which was presented at the 20th Pafos Aphrodite Festival in a production by the Italian organisation C.I.A.L.M. – Teatro Lirico Italiano in collaboration with the Ventidio Basso Ascoli Piceno Theatre and the participation of the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra.
The premiere of one of the most popular Italian comic operas on August 31st, as well as the two performances that followed on 1st and 2nd September, captivated viewers, offering a variety of wonderful comic elements and unique musical improvisations, causing excitement, plenty of laughter, and the extended applause of thousands of opera lovers. The viewers enjoyed a unique audio-visual opera show with amazing performances by prominent artists of the lyrical scene.
Magic and realism
The internationally acclaimed director Lev Pugliese, utilizing the picturesque and atmospheric space, brought to the audience, in an extremely apt way, the adventures and tricks of the resourceful “demon” barber Figaro, Rosina’s love crush, the disguises of Count Almaviva and Don Bartolo’s blunders. The impeccable artistic direction of the performance by Claudio Pugliese and the great performances of the talented lyric artists fascinated the audience, while the musical direction of the conductor Jens Georg Bachmann was outstanding.

The President of the Republic of Cyprus Mr. Nikos Anastasiadis, declared the opening of the Festival at the premiere, whilst the Chairman of the Board of the PAFC Company, Mayor of Paphos Mr. Phedonas Phedonos warmly welcomed the audience. This great cultural event was attended by ministers, party leaders, government officials, parliamentarians, ambassadors and other prominent figures.
Pafos Aphrodite Festival, completed 20 years of successful course and mesmerizing fireworks lit up the sky of Paphos in honour of this milestone, surprising the audience.
The curtain call of the 20th Pafos Aphrodite Festival, found organisers and opera fans renewing their appointment for 2019 with, as promised, yet another high standard opera production.
