AfroBanana Festival Announces 10th Anniversary Edition
The island’s most unmissable summer event invites festival fans to join them for a five-day escape from reality in Gialia
Following a two-year break, the Alternative Brains Rule (ABR) team has announced the long-awaited return of their award-winning AfroBanana Festival this summer, promising what is set to be the best musical line-up to date. From July 13-14-15-16-17, the transformative five-day retreat will bring its unique magic to the captivating backdrop that is Val’s Place; high in the cool, green surroundings of Gialia, in Paphos, just 200m from the sea. Reuniting the community in a collective mission to break free and lean into unrestricted creativity and self-expression, the event promises to reawaken the senses through an unsurpassed line-up of music, workshops, wellness activities, pop-up food and drink stalls and more.
And the 2022 edition marks the 10th anniversary of Cyprus’ favourite summer festivity, with the past decade seeing AfroBanana grow to become the island’s most impactful gathering, bringing together culture, wellness and community. With a well-earned reputation as highly trusted curators of meaningful interdisciplinary experiences, AfroBanana unites a tribe of loyal festival fans each year, who return not only for the consistently high-quality musical acts, but also for the holistic escape from reality, surreal otherworldly atmosphere and palpable feeling of connection, community and collaboration.
In keeping with their position as principal purveyors of top quality music, the ABR crew – together with a hand-picked selection of collaborators – have put together perhaps the best line-up yet for 2022. This year will see an incredible collection of performances, across a diverse spectrum of musical genres. Headline acts include self-confessed extra-terrestrial, intergalactic ravers Henge, as well as brass band collective Balaphonics, returning to the AfroBanana stage after their unforgettable performance seven years ago!
The infectiously joyous Brass Rave Unit will also be gracing the stage this year, as well as DJ Ground all the way from Japan and Zürich-based DJ/producer, Manuel Fischer. They’ll be joined by local heroes from Greece and Cyprus including Monsieur Doumani – taking time out from their world tour to entertain the AfroBanana crowds – as well as DJs Dimitri Papaioannou, Chevy, BNC, Black Athena, Nok, Dan Lo, Ina, Patsas, Plasmatic, Bombasoul, Sixonesix, Mr.Z and Thessaloniki-based seven-person band Kapten.
Aiming to introduce Cyprus audiences to diverse and promising new creators, while also supporting established names on the creative scene, AfroBanana 2022 is a co-curated exploration of eclectic sounds and immersive experiences. Friends of the festival have worked together with ABR to enrich the experience, with collaborators such as independent record label Skyvector Music and mobile party series Needless coming on board, as well as Sousami bar In Limassol, Melody Lab, Roots Crew reggae sound system and Animafest. New kids on the hip-hop block, Strawberry Jam, will be bringing their fresh outlook to the line-up, together with Barco Pirata collective, who first established the scene.
Bringing all these pioneers, trend-setters and connoisseurs under one roof – or onto one stage – is hugely significant, creating a progressive community of like-minded creatives collectively working to level-up the scene in Cyprus. But it’s not all about music. Taking visitors on an even deeper emotional journey, the team at Mind Body Spirit have also joined forces with AfroBanana this year, to oversee a powerful schedule of wellness workshops, showcasing a wide range of diverse disciplines.
Camping space will be available for those looking to fully soak in the magnetic allure and the enchanting setting, with festival fans encouraged to grab a tent and camp under the stars, or in the shade of fragrant orange trees. And while the campsite at Val’s Place has been recently revamped with new improved facilities and everything you’d need for the perfect five-day getaway, space is still limited, so campers are advised to book their spot early.
Meanwhile, tickets are now live at abr.interticket.com, with a range of options available from the full five-days for a retreat away from home without leaving the island, to weekend or one-day ticket options.
Festival dates: Wednesday – Sunday, July 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17, Val’s Place, Gialia, Paphos.
